NCCI Students Natalie Salguero and Mohamed Nimir are participating in the Partners in Experiential Learning (PEL) Cancer Research Co-op Program at the London Health Sciences Centre. Natalie is working on a project investigating tumors in chicken embyos while Mohamed is working on frog and bacterial DNA studies. Each student is gaining a rich laboratory experience, contributing to research projects and learning to use a variety of laboratory equipment and techniques.

This initiative is part of an ongoing partnership between NCCI and the PEL organization which began in 2007. Students who get such experience while still in secondary school are often able to secure jobs typically reserved for students in later university. Our students have often been given important roles in various research projects and drawn the praise of a number of professors and researchers. Best wishes to Natalie and Mohamed in their research efforts!

“Is there a way to calculate the number of vertices in this shape without counting?”

Further to his question, we might ask whether there is also a way to determine the number of edges without counting or we might calculate the radius of the smallest sphere inside which this shape would fit.

What are your answers to these questions?

We are pleased to announce the 2011 NCCI Grade 11 service trip scheduled for early May.

This year, as with last year, we plan to travel to Guyana, South America. The objectives of the trip are to foster ties of international friendship and collaboration and to offer service to a distant community. This will provide grade 11 and 12 students with a rich opportunity to consider what we have studied here at NCCI in light of practical international experience.

Our service trip this year is organized in collaboration with the Guyana Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and will see the students travel to Amerindian (First Nations) villages in Guyana. Currently, we are considering two regions for the trip – an area centring around Santa Mission, a small village up the Demerara river from the national capital, Georgetown, or Lethem, a small town in the south west area of the country. The Guyana Ministry of Amerindian Affairs hopes to confirm one of the two locations within the next few business days.

Our activities this year will centre on interactions with local elementary schools. Our students will offer artistic presentations, activities and virtues lessons to the students at these school. In addition, our activities may include the following:

Visiting children at orphanages

Cooking and assisting at soup kitchens and food banks

Children’s Classes

Junior Youth Activities

Painting Orphanages and Schools

Gardening

Concrete work, carpentry and construction

Special Activity Days
